William Richard Standen was born in Ewell, Surrey giving his occupation as Labourer. He would attest at London on 23rd August 1899, aged 18 years, 5 months. Posted to the 2nd Dragoon Guards, he would then see service in South Africa during the Boer War taking part in the operations in Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal. He would remain in South Africa until February 1905 when he was transferred to the Army Reserve, he would be discharged having completed his service in August 1911
