Queen’s South Africa Medal 1899-1902, 4 Clasps: Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Transvaal awarded to Private W. Newman, 2nd Battalion, East Kent Regiment – the Buffs who saw service in South Africa during the Boer War being present on operations at the Relief of Kimberley on 15th February 1900, in action at Paardeberg on 17th to 26th February 1900, and at Driefontein on 10th March 1900, as well as on operations in the Transvaal.

William Newman was born in Colchester, Essex and giving his trade as a Labourer attested at Canterbury on 6th September 1890, he was posted to 2nd Battalion, East Kent Regiment – the Buffs with whom he saw service as a Private (No. 3187).
He would be tried, convicted and imprisoned of failing to appear on 23rd February 1891, and then having returned to duty, he would be tried, convicted and imprisoned for absence on 14th July 1891 serving 42 days as punishment. He would travel to India, arriving on 11th December 1891 and remaining there until 12th July 1894, but without any medal entitlement during the period.
Having returned home on 13th July 1894 He would be transferred to the Army Reserve on 3rd September 1897, before being recalled to Army Service and posted on 4th December 1899 to the East Kent Regiment – the Buffs, arriving in South Africa on 22nd December 1899 he would take part in the Boer War being present on operations at the Relief of Kimberley on 15th February 1900, in action at Paardeberg on 17th to 26th February 1900, and at Driefontein on 10th March 1900, as well as on operations in the Transvaal.
Newman returned to the UK on 20th August 1902, he was discharged on 2nd September 1902.
