Phillips, 1st Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment who saw service in South Africa during the Boer War where he was present on operations in Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal as well as in the action at Laing’s Nek.

James Phillips was born in Leeds, Yorkshire and giving his trade as a moulder attested at Pontefract on 3rd September 1885 he would initially serve at home, before travelling to Halifax, Nova Scotia on 27th September 1886, he would then travel to the West Indies on 1st October 1888 remaining on station there until 18th March 1891 when he embarked for South Africa.
He would serve in South Africa from 19th March 1891 until he returned home on 18th May 1893, and then remained at home until he travelled to South Africa on 27th April 1900 to take part in the Boer War where he would see service during the operations in Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal as well as in the action at Laing’s Nek.
He would return home on 30th July 1902 and would be discharged on 1st August 1902.
