Thomas Preston was born in St. Austell, Cornwall and attested at Ramsgate on 27th January 1900 and was posted to 2nd Battalion, East Kent Regiment – the Buffs. He would see service in South Africa during the Boer War on operations in Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal during the period 16th February 1900 until 9th June 1901. He returned home on 10th June 1901 and was discharged 5 days later.
