Joseph Maggs was born in Westminster, London and giving his trade as Labourer attested at London on 12th May 1898, he would initially serve at home before travelling to South Africa on 22nd December 1899 where he would take part in the Boer War as a Private (No. 5593) with the 2nd Battalion, East Kent Regiment - The Buffs, and would be present during the relief of Kimberley on 15th February 1900, at Paardeberg on 17th to 26th February 1900, and on the operations in the Transvaal. While in South Africa he would be appointed Lance Corporal on 5th July 1900 before suffering demotion to Private on 30th November 1900 after being court martialled and convicted of insubordination.
He would return home on 28th October 1902 and would be discharged on 11th May 1910.
