Queen’s South Africa Medal 1899-1902, 3 Clasps: Orange Free State, Transvaal, Laing’s Nek awarded to Private C. Benbow, 2nd Battalion, East Surrey Regiment who was present in South Africa during the Boer War where he took part in operations in Orange Free State and Transvaal as well as in the action at Laing’s Nek which took place from 2nd to 9th June 1900.

Charles Benbow was born in Clerkenwell, London and attested at Kingston on 24th November 1883 seeing service as a Private (No. 1037) with the East Surrey Regiment and subsequently spending time in both Gibraltar and East Indies before being discharged on 23rd November 1895. Later recalled, he would see service in the Boer War with the 2nd Battalion, East Surrey Regiment taking part in operations in Orange Free State and Transvaal as well as in the action at Laing's Nek which took place from 2nd to 9th June 1900.
He would return to England mid-way through the Boer War as time expired and later died in March 1940 having been a resident of Walworth.
