Patrick Murphy was born in Ballymote, County Sligo joined at Galway on 8th October 1884 and served until he was sent to the reserve on 14th November 1896. He would then rejoin the colours on mobilisation on 1st February 1900 and would be posted to 1st Battalion on 14th February 1900 seeing service in South Africa during the Boer War where he took part in operations in Natal, Orange Free State and Transvaal.
