James Johnson initially saw service as a Sergeant (No. 5398) with the 3rd Battalion, East Kent Regiment and later as part of the South African Constabulary in South Africa during the Boer War on operations in Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal.
He would be discharged as a Corporal from the South African Constabulary on 16th August 1902 giving his intended address as 49 Signal Street, East London, Cape Colony.
