John Evans was born in Spalding, Lincolnshire and joined the East Kent Regiment at Canterbury on 13th March 1885 and would see service in India from 22nd March 1887 until 25th November 1892 before he later joined the Army Reserve at Warley on 24th March 1897, subsequently being recalled and posted to the 2nd Battalion, East Kent Regiment – the Buffs as a Private on 15th January 1900, being finally discharged on 18th October 1901 having seen service in South Africa during the Boer War on operations in Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal
