W. Nicholls was born in Wraxall, Somerset and was living in Brighton when on 20th April 1901 when giving his trade as a Seafarer he attested for service with the South African Constabulary at Bristol. He would travel to South Africa and take part in the Boer War, where he would be present on operations in Cape Colony, Orange Free State and Transvaal. He would be discharged on 24th April 1903.
