John Nelson was born at Woolwich and served as a Private (No. 4755) with the 3rd Battalion, East Kent Regiment – the Buffs during the Boer War in South Africa on operations in Cape Colony and Orange Free State, released upon the termination of his engagement on 13th February 1902, he re-attested on 27th April 1903, being appointed Lance Corporal on 25th May 1903 before later being dismissed temporarily unfit on 17th May 1904. He was finally discharged upon the termination of his engagement on 26th April 1907, his conduct given as very good, and this Queen’s South Africa Medal as his sole medal entitlement.
