Queen’s South Africa Medal 1899-1902, 2 Clasps: Talana, Transvaal, with faint ghost dates to reverse, awarded to Private J. Cregan, 1st Battalion, later 2nd Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers who saw service in South Africa during the Boer War where he would take part in the operations in Transvaal as well as being present in action at the Battle of Talana on 20th October 1899.

Joseph Cregan was born in Rushwee, Slane, County Meath, Ireland and giving his trade as labourer attested at Dublin on 13th December 1895 saw service as Private (No. 5603) with the 1st Battalion, later 2nd Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Initially serving at home, he would travel to the East Indies on 6th October 1896 until 17th May 1897 when he would travel to South Africa. He would be present in South Africa where he would take part in the operations in Transvaal as well as being present in action at the Battle of Talana on 20th October 1899.
Later returning home to the UK on 28th February 1901 he would be discharged as medically unfit and noted as insane on 25th June 1901.
