Hillsdon, 2nd Battalion, East Surrey Regiment who would see service in South Africa during the Boer War where he would take part in the operations in Natal and Transvaal. He would later serve during the Great War, but did not leave the UK.

John Hillsdon was born in Shoreditch and attested at Kingston on 29th December 1883 subsequently serving with the 1st Battalion, East Surrey Regiment with whom he would be stationed in Gibraltar from 4th March 1884 until 21st December 1884 and then the East Indies from 22nd December 1884 until 22nd May 1891 when he returned home.
Discharged on 28th December 1895, he would be recalled upon the outbreak of the Great War seeing service as a Sergeant (No. 1084) with the 2nd Battalion, East Surrey Regiment and taking part in operations in Natal and Transvaal.
He would also serve during the Great War, but did not leave the UK, his only entitlement being a Silver War Badge, issued to him aged 52 for being discharged due to sickness.
