Private (No. 236) J. Smith, 2nd Battalion, Duke of Edinburgh’s Own Volunteer Rifles saw service in South Africa during the Boer War where he would take part in operations in Cape Colony.
The roll for the 2nd Battalion, Duke of Edinburgh’s Own Volunteer Rifles states that Smith served between 7th January and 15th April 1901, but states he is not identical to any J. Smith who served with 1st or 2nd Battalion, Duke of Edinburgh’s Own Volunteer Rifles. He also appears on the roll of the Oudtshoorn Volunteer Rifles which states he served with the 2nd Battalion, Duke of Edinburgh’s Own Volunteer Rifles.
