Charles Nicholls was born in St. Mary’s, Stafford and attested on the 31st August 1898 subsequently seeing service as a Private (No. 6179) with the 1st Battalion, Rifle Brigade. Having initially served at home, he would travel to South Africa on 3rd September 1900 where he would take part in the Boer War, being present on operations in Cape Colony and Orange Free State.
