William Muggeridge was born in the parish of Banstead, near the town of Sutton, Surrey, and was 18 when he attested for the 5th Dragoon Guards at Guildford on 29 July 1891. He served in South Africa from 4 Dec 1899 until 14 Jul 1900, otherwise served at home, and was discharged on completion of his 12 year term of enlistment on 28 Jul 1903.
