Punjab Medal 1848-1849, 2 Clasps: Goojerat, Mooltan awarded to Private J. Ludford, 1st Battalion, 60th Royal Rifles who saw service during the Second Sikh War in the Punjab Campaign of 1848 to 1849, being present in action at the siege and capture of Mooltan from 7th September 1848 to 22nd January 1849, and the Battle of Goojerat on 21st February 1849, and the subsequent pursuit and surrender of the Sikh army.

James Ludford was born in Hythe, Kent on 26th February 1811. He attested for the 60th Rifles at Rochester, Kent on 28th February 1825 aged just 14 years, receiving a bounty of £2.0s.0d. With the 1st Battalion he served in Portugal, January-March 1827, Gibraltar, November 1830-October 1834 and Malta from October 1834-July 1836. Ludford was tried by Garrison Court Martial at Malta on 23rd July 1835 for being ‘drunk on duty’ on 2nd July 1835. Being found guilty he was sentenced to 300 lashes.
The 1st Battalion then served on Corfu, July 1836-April 1840 before returning to England. Ludford was promoted to Corporal in August 1844 but was reduced to Private in February 1845 having been tried by Regimental Court Martial, again for being ‘drunk on duty’. In July 1845, with the battalion, Ludford then proceeded to India and saw service in the Second Sikh War, being actively involved in the siege and capture of Mooltan and the battle of Goojerat. He was invalided back to England in September 1849 and was discharged on 10th September 1850 being found unfit for further service.
He was later an out-pensioner at Chelsea.
