William Gay Clarke was born on 16th July 1869, the son of John Clarke of Chieveley and Norah Helen Clarke who was the daughter of Dr. William Bodkin of Chelmsford. He was educated at King’s College, London and during the Great War acted as the Acting Director of Inland Waterways and Docks. He would serve as a Major and later Temporary Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Engineers.
Clarke would be made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in the London Gazette of 12th December 1919.
He is not entitled to a Victory Medal and we have not been able to confirm the recipient as having been Mentioned in Despatches.
