Edwin Green saw service as a Corporal and later Serjeant (No. 232) with the 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot and attested on 10th December 1858. He would be sent to New Zealand for service during the Second Taranaki War from 1861 to 1866. Green was present during the operations. During this campaign, Ensign John Thornton Down and Drummer Dudley Stagpoole, both of the 57th Foot, were awarded the Victoria Cross for their actions during a skirmish at Allen's Hill near Omata in October 1863. Drummer Stagpoole had already been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for the energy and devotion which he displayed on the 25th September, 1863, at the affair near Kaipakopako. 349 New Zealand Medal’s with the reverse dates for 1861 to 1866 were issued to the men of the 57th Foot.
Promoted Corporal on 27th November 1864 and Sergeant on 16th January 1868 and would be discharged in November 1879 after 20 years and 350 days service. His conduct noted as being very good and confirming his entitled to a New Zealand Medal as well as a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
