Military General Service Medal 1793-1814, 1 Clasp: Barrosa awarded to Private J. Wilson, 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards – Scots Guards who saw service in Spain during the Peninsula War where he would be present at the Battle of Barrosa in southern Spain on 5th March 1811. He would be discharged on 8th October 1814 as a result of ophthalmia, he would later be admitted as an in-pensioner at the Royal Hospital on 10th October 1836 and died there on 15th July 1848.

James Wilson was born in Rutherglen, Glasgow, enlisted aged 21 on 17th May 1794 into the 3rd Regiment of Foot Guards – Scots Guards with whom he would see 20 years and 143 days service including in Spain during the Peninsula War where he would be present at the Battle of Barrosa in southern Spain on 5th March 1811. He would be discharged on 8th October 1814 suffering from defect of sight caused by ophthalmia as a result of service in Egypt.
On 14th September 1836 he would present himself in front of a board for admission as an in-pensioner at the Royal Hospital as a result of his defective eyesight caused by his service, subsequently being admitted on 10th October 1836. He died at the Royal Hospital on 15th July 1848, aged 74.
