Military General Service Medal 1793-1814, 1 Clasp: Barrosa awarded to Gunner G. Shipley, 9th Battalion, Royal Artillery who was present during the Peninsula War in Spain where he was present at the Battle of Barrosa on 5th March 1811. He would be discharged on 1st November 1814 in consequence of a fractured arm and knee suffered in the service. 1 of 70 single clasp medals for Barrosa issued to officers and men of the Royal Artillery.

George Shipley was born at Eggerton, Derbyshire and attested on 15th September 1805 aged 17 giving his trade as a weaver.
He would subsequently see service as a Gunner with the 9th Battalion, Royal Artillery and was present during the Peninsula War in Spain where he was present at the Battle of Barrosa on 5th March 1811. He would subsequently be discharged on 1st November 1814 in consequence of a fractured arm and knee suffered in the service. He died in 1857 and is buried in Manchester Christ Church, Hepworth parish.
In all 70 single clasp medals for Barrosa were issued to officers and men of the Royal Artillery.
