Malta George Cross Fiftieth Anniversary Commemorative Medal, first striking.
Condition: Nearly Extremely Fine.
Sanctioned by the government of Malta in 1992 to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the award of the George Cross by King George VI to the island for its heroic resistance to prolonged Axis attack during the Second World War. The medal has been awarded to surviving veterans who served in Malta in the armed forces and auxiliary services between 10th June 1940 and 8th September 1943. Permission by British citizens to wear this was subsequently granted by the Queen. As a number of veterans applied for the medal after the cut-off date of 15th April 1994, the Maltese Government sanctioned a second striking.
