John Winstanley was born in West Derby on 2nd September 1890 and married Margaret Liderth at West Derby on 18th June 1913. By 1921 he was serving as a Police Sergeant with the Liverpool Watch Committee at Prescot Street Police Station. He would subsequently being awarded the Liverpool City Police Medal for Good Service in Silver on 10th October 1935.
At the time of the 1939 Register he was noted as a Watchman at the Bank of England, a Liverpool City Police Pensioner and living at 2 Monash Road, Liverpool.
