Separate awards for gallantry were instituted in respect of the King’s African Rifles (East Africa) and the West African Frontier Force (Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Gambia and the Gold Coast). They were issued until 1942 when they were superseded by the British Distinguished Conduct Medal.
