Albert Walter Hall was born in Newington, London and giving his trade as a porter attested on 18th February 1889. Initially serving at home he would travel to Burma on 30th September 1890, he would then travel to India on 17th February 1891, where he would serve until 27th November 1896.
During his service in India he would find himself in trouble with the authorities on several occasions. On 20th June 1893 he would be convicted for failing to appear at the place of parade appointed by his commanding officer. On 2nd February 1894 he would be tried and convicted for breaking out of barracks and striking and using threatening language to a superior officer, and finally on 4th April 1896 he would be tried and convicted of conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline.
Hall would return home on 28th November 1896, before traveling to South Africa on 4th January 1900 where he would remain until 12th February 1902. Having then returned home he would be discharged on 15th March 1902.
