Alfred Solley was born in St. Lawrence, Ramsgate, Kent and attested at Ramsgate on 19th January 1900 going on to see service as a Private (No. 5843) with the 3rd Battalion, East Kent Regiment in South Africa during the Boer War where he would take part in the operations in Cape Colony and Orange Free State, earning additional entitlement to the Queen’s South Africa Medal with those two clasps.
