Thomas Beckett was born in Tuddenham, Suffolk and attested at Ipswich on 25th October 1890 seeing service as a Driver (No. 9684) with the Army Service Corps where he served at home until discharged to the Reserve on 25th October 1893. He would then be recalled to Army Service on 1st January 1900, and would go on to see service in South Africa between 24th April 1900 and 2nd September 1902 during which time he saw action during the Boer War.
Whilst in South Africa Beckett would be convicted and imprisoned on 20th July 1901 for striking a superior officer during the execution of his office.
He would return home on 3rd September 1902 and finally be discharged on 30th October 1902.
