Khedives Sudan Medal 1896-1908, 1 Clasp; Hafir, engraved naming awarded to Private A. Thomas, 1st Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment who took part in the Dongola Expedition of 1896 and later during the Boer War where he would take part in the operations in Transvaal.

Alfred Thomas was born in St. Marys, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire and attested at Wolverhampton on 5th December 1892, giving his trade as a locksmith. He would be posted to the 2nd Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment on 13th April 1893 where he would serve as a Private (No. 3988) before being transferred to the 1st Battalion on 20th March 1894. Then serving on Malta until 4th October 1895. Promoted Lance Corporal he reverted back to Private on 26th February 1896.
He would serve in Egypt and the Sudan between 5th October 1895 until 11th October 1897 taking part in the Dongola Expedition of 1896. After leaving Egypt he would serve in India until 2nd February 1902, when he would travel to South Africa.
In South Africa he would take part in the closing stages of the Boer War where he would be present in the operations in Transvaal. He would arrive home from South Africa on 11th October 1902 and would be finally discharged on 4th December 1904.
