Italy - Kingdom of: Unification of Italy Commemorative Medal for the Liberation of Rome 1870, bronze, measuring 32 mm in diameter, the obverse with the official ‘SPQR’ (Senatus Populusque Romanus, meaning "The Senate and the People of Rome”), and the initials ‘C M’ for the designer Carlo Moscetti. the reverse has the embossed inscription: ‘ROMA RIVENDICATA AI SUOI LIBERATORI’ (Rome reclaimed for its liberators). The "Liberation" or "Capture" of Rome occurred on 20 September 1870, when the Italian Army, commanded by General Raffaele Cadorna, breached the Aurelian Walls at Porta Pia. This marked the final event of the Risogimento, ending over 1,000 years of papal temporal power and unifying Italy.
