The Brigata Bologna was an infantry brigade of the Royal Italian Army (comprising the 39th and 40th Infantry Regiments) famous for its service during World War I. Instead of individual medals for every soldier, the brigade's War Flags were formally decorated with two prestigious military awards, the Al Valore Militare in Silver, and the Al Valore Militare in Bronze. The Silver medal was awarded for extreme bravery during the 1915 battles on the Karst Plateau, where the brigade successfully pushed enemy troops out of Castelnuovo. The Bronze medal was awarded for later offensives against Hudi Log in 1917 and operations in 1918. The Brigade particularly distinguished itself during the Battle of Vittorio Veneto in late October 1918.
