The Medal has its origins as early as 26 March 1833 when Carlo Alberto of Sardinia instituted a gold and a silver award for acts of exceptional valour. The Medal was instituted in 1949 after the abolition of the monarchy to replace the award created in 1887 that bore the royal arms.
