Thomas Roper was born in Kegworth, near Loughborough in Leicestershire and attested into the 18th Regiment of Foot at Kegworth on 23rd July 1846 seeing over 7 years service with the Regiment before joining the 75th (Stirlingshire) Regiment of Foot on 1st December 1853 and serving with that Regiment until 31st October 1859 including during the Indian Mutiny in India where he would take part in the siege of Delhi which lasted from 30th May to 14th September 1857 and later during the operations to relieve Lucknow.
Roper would subsequently be discharged at Meerut on 9th October 1859 after 11 years and 357 days service in the East Indies with his conduct being very good, he would later re-enlist with the 37th Regiment of Foot.
