George Wray was born in Leeds and attested for the 30th (Cambridgeshire) Regiment of Foot at Leeds on 16th April 1849. Having subsequently transferred, he saw service as a Private (No. 3253) with the 61st (South Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot in India during the Indian Mutiny where he would be present at the siege of Delhi which lasted from 30th May to 14th September 1857.
