James Robinson saw service during the Great War as a Private (No.2228 later No.200890) with the 2nd/4th (Cumberland and Westmorland) Battalion, Border Regiment, Territorial Force, whose battalion saw service out in India from March 1915, and was attached on arrival to the Poona Brigade in 6th (Poona) Divisional Area. Serving in India for the duration of the war, in November 1915 it transferred to the Jubbulpore Brigade in 5th (Mhow) Division. Then in March 1916 it transferred to Peshawar Brigade in 1st (Peshawar) Division. In March 1917 it moved to the 4th (Rawalpindi) Brigade in the 2nd (Rawalpindi) Division, and in December 1917 it transferred to the Nowshera Brigade in the 1st (Peshawar) Division. In October 1918 it returned to the 4th (Rawalpindi) Brigade in the 2nd (Rawalpindi) Division, and Robinson then saw service on the North West Frontier of India during the Third Afghanistan War in the period from May to September 1919. Additionally entitled to the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
