Joseph Boardman was born in Liverpool and enlisted into the East Kent Regiment – the Buffs at Fort William, Calcutta on 2nd September 1892. Remaining in India throughout his service he would later serve as part of the Chitral Relief Force in 1895 and on operations on the Punjab Frontier which lasted from 10th June 1897 to 6th April 1898.
He transferred to the Army Reserve on 4th September 1899 and then spent a further five years in the reserve also in India until his discharge on 1st September 1904.
