Joseph Withey was born in London, Middlesex and giving his trade as a Labourer attested at Greenwich on 19th September 1883 seeing service as a Private (No. 1013) with 1st Battalion, East Kent Regiment – the Buffs.
Initially at home in the UK he would travel to Malta on 30th January 1885 where he would remain until 12th September 1885. He would then spend time in the Straits Settlements (Singapore) until 10th March 1887.
Cox would arrive in India on 11th March 1887 and remain there until 6th November 1895 and would participate in the operations leading to the relief of Chitral which lasted from 7th March to 15th August 1895.
Returning to the UK on 7th November 1895 he would be discharged the following day.
