India General Service Medal 1895-1902, 1 Clasp: Relief of Chitral 1895 awarded to Lance Corporal W. McKenzie, 1st Battalion, East Kent Regiment – the Buffs who saw service in India during the operations to relieve Chitral in 1895 and later in South Africa during the Boer War. He was also a member of the Army Temperance Association.

William McKenzie was born in Chatham, Kent and attested at Rochester on 27th February 1888, initially serving with 2nd Battalion as Private (No. 2463), and gaining a Mounted Infantry Certificate on 8th January 1889, he would then be posted to the 1st Battalion on 26th February 1891 and would travel to India along with the Battalion on that date. He would be appointed Lance Corporal on 7th August 1894 and then see service during the operations to relieve Chitral in 1895.
Transferred to the Army Reserve on 4th February 1896 and was recalled to Army Service on 4th December 1899 seeing service in South Africa during the Boer War up until 18th February 1901.
He was discharged on 26th February 1901 having completed the first period of his engagement. He would subsequently re-attest into the Royal Garrison Regiment at Aldershot on 2nd March 1902 before being discharged medically unfit on 11th May 1905.
Additionally entitled to a Queen’s South Africa Medal.
