John Davis was born in Brompton, Chatham and attested into the East Kent Regiment at Canterbury on 14th August 189, initially serving at home in the UK travelled to India on 4th December 1893 and remained there until 9th September 1898 taking part in the operations to relieve Chitral as part of the Chitral Relief Force which lasted from 7th March to 15th August 1895. He subsequently returned to the UK and was discharged medically unfit on 15th December 1899
