John Parsons was born in Cowfold, Horsham, Sussex and attested at Chichester on 28th December 1893 having given his trade as Labourer, he initially served at home until 1st December 1895 when he travelled to India.
Parsons would see service during the operations on the Punjab Frontier which lasted from 10th June 1897 to 6th April 1898 as a Private (No. 4439) with the 1st Battalion, East Kent Regiment – the Buffs, he would be discharged medically unfit the day before the end of these operations on 5th April 1898 having contracted malaria.
