John Charles Downs was born in Hammersmith, London and attested at London on 19th April 1895 initially seeing service as a Private (No. 4814) with the 2nd Battalion, East Kent Regiment – the Buffs before transferring to the 1st Battalion, East Kent Regiment – the Buffs on 28th October 1897 with whom he would travel to India and see service during the operations on the Punjab Frontier which lasted from 10th June 1897 to 6th April 1898.
He would return home from India on 14th March 1903 being discharged on 18th April 1907.
