Alfred Hooker was born in Town Malling, Maidstone, Kent and attested at Maidstone on 27th December 1893 giving his trade as labourer.
Initially serving at home he travelled to India on 26th November 1896 where would see service during the operations on the Punjab Frontier which lasted from 10th June 1897 to 6th April 1898 with the 1st Battalion, East Kent Regiment – the Buffs.
He would subsequently remain in India until 13th October 1903, from where he travleed to Aden until 22nd June 1904. He then travelled home until 1st May 1905, subsequently travelling to South Africa until 26th October 1908, when he travelled to Hong Kong until 4th December 1910, Singapore until 18th December 1911, when he returned home until 11th April 1912 the date of his discharge.
