Patrick Kelly saw service as a Private (No. 159) with 1st Battalion, 7th Regiment of Foot – The Royal Fusiliers who was present during the expedition up the Umbeyla Pass which lasted from 20th October to 23rd December 1863. Having been discharged in 1866, he would re-enlist in the 59th (2nd Nottinghamshire) Regiment of Foot.
