Awarded to Private (No.1210) John Brady, 1st Battalion, 3rd East Kent Regiment of Foot – The Buffs, who in 1871 was located at Benares in April, May and June 1871. With the formation of an expedition to make reprisals against the murderers of Mr. James Birch, the British Resident in Perak. Brady was one of 600 men present from his regiment during the Perak operations which lasted from 27th November 1874 to 20th March 1876. The troops and a Naval Brigade advanced on the upper reaches of the Perak River simultaneously from two points. Severe punishment was inflicted on the natives, but the murderers were not brought to account for some time afterwards.
