Alfred W. Cowper saw service as a Private (No. 1813) with the 4th Battalion, Rifle Brigade and was present during the operations against the Jowaki Afridis which lasted from 9th November 1877 to 19th January 1878, he would also be present in the Second Afghan War where he would take part in the action at Ali Musjid on 21st November 1878.
Additionally entitled to an Afghanistan Medal 1878-1880 with clasp Ali Musjid.
