Byrne, 1 Battery, C Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery who was present during the operations against the Jowaki Afridis which lasted from 9th November 1877 to 19th January 1878. The Jowakis Afridis who occupied the territory between Peshawar and the Kohat Pass, made continuous attacks on their neighbours. He was then present during the Second Afghanistan War being present in action at Ali Musjid on 21st November 1878.

John Lawrence Byrne was born in St. Nicholas, Dublin and having enlisted at Dublin on 14th February 1861 saw service as a Gunner (No. 2100) with 1 Battery, C Brigade, Royal Horse Artillery initially serving in the UK from 15th February 1861 until 11th July 1861 when he travelled to India, where he would be present during the operations against the Jowaki Afridis which lasted from 9th November 1877 to 19th January 1878. The Jowakis Afridis who occupied the territory between Peshawar and the Kohat Pass, made continuous attacks on their neighbours. He was then present during the Second Afghanistan War being present in action at Ali Musjid on 21st November 1878. He would serve in India until 5th March 1881 when he returned home after 19 years and 234 days there, finally being discharged on 20th January 1882.
