Awarded to a Kote Havildar (No.2437) Habib Khan, 2nd Queen’s Own Corps of Guides Infantry, Indian Army, who saw service with the Hazara Field Force operations under Major General W.K. Elles, C.B., against the Hussanzais and Akazais in the Black Mountains between 12th March and 16th May 1891. These operations were carried out be two columns. commanded by Colonels Williamson and Hammond, which advanced to Darband. There was little fighting, much of the activity consisted of the repelling of raids on the columns when on the march and when road making. During the operations a party of insurgents were chased up and eventually captured on the 9800 feet high Machai Peak. The Kote Havildar was the Indian NCO responsible for handing out and locking up firearms and ammunition.
