Great War Western Front Northumberland Yeomanry, Second World War Home Front and Police Special Constabulary long service group awarded to Private E.G. Swann, Northumberland Hussars Yeomanry later Corps of Hussars. A miner from Cramlington, Northumberland, he then saw service with the 1st/1st Battalion out on the Western Front from June 1915 till an unspecified period when his battalion was the 8th Corps Cavalry Regiment. Present out there again from June 1918, he was injured by gas in April 1918. He subsequently serving during the Second World War on the Home Front in Civil Defence as a Special Constable with the Police Special Constabulary.

Edward Gray Swann was born in Cramlington, Northumberland, and having worked as a miner, as of 1901 he was 17 years old and working as a coal miner putter, then with the Great War he attested for service with the Territorial Force when aged 31 at Newton Hall on 5th May 1915, joining as a Private (No.1923) the Northumberland Hussars Yeomanry, and was posted to the 3rd/1st Battalion.
As such he saw service out on the Western Front from 10th June 1915 with the 1st/1st Battalion which was serving as the 8th Corps Cavalry Regiment. Posted home for some unspecified reason, he returned to the front with his regiment on 9th June 1916, but was then injured as a result of gas in April 1918, from which he suffered from a disorderly action of the heart, and was treated out in France at No.2 Convalescent Hospital in Rouen. Swann who subsequently saw service as a Private (No.270953) with the Corps of Hussars, was transferred to the Class Z Territorial Reserve on 28th April 1919. Swann subsequently joined as a Special Constable the Police Special Constabulary, and saw service during the Second World War on the Home Front in Civil Defence
