Great War Western Front Military Medal group awarded to Lance Corporal later Captain G.A. Sargent, 11th (1st South Downs) Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, later Captain, 17th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment who saw service on the Western Front, being awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette of 19th February 1917 for an act he performed in December 1916. He would go on to be commissioned and would see service as a Lieutenant later Captain in the 17th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment being gassed on 23rd August 1918 during fighting at Mercatel. He would later receive an immediate emergency commission in the Pioneer Corps on 29th June 1945.

George Alfred Sargent from Bexhill would see service on the Western Front as a Private, later Lance Corporal (No. 1171) with the 11th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, being awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette on 19th February 1917 for an act he performed in December 1916, this being mentioned in the Battalion’s war diary.
Sargent would later be commissioned and serve as a Lieutenant in the 17th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment and later as a Captain with the 52nd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. He is noted as having been gassed in the Battalion War Diary on 23rd August 1918 during fighting at Mercatel and was sent to hospital for treatment.
Sargent would later receive an immediate emergency commission from the ranks on 29th June 1945 being appointed a Second Lieutenant in the Pioneer Corps.
