Walter Chaplin saw service as a Private (No. 11838) with the Royal Berkshire Regiment on the Western Front on 30th December 1914 and later saw service as a Private (No. 253993) with the Royal Engineers. He would be admitted to the 4th Ambulance Train on 24th June 1915 suffering from Myalgia and Influenza. Discharged to Z Reserve on 20th June 1919.
Chaplin would subsequently be Mentioned in Despatches in the London Gazette of 7th July 1919 for his service with the 1st Army Signal Company, Royal Engineers.
