Great War Western Front 1914 Old Contemptible and January 1915 Ypres Salient Casualty group awarded to Lance Corporal G. Hurdley, 1st Battalion, King’s Shropshire Light Infantry, who was present out on the Western Front from 20th September 1914, and was serving as a Lance Corporal and Acting Corporal when he was killed in action on 31st January 1915 during the fighting in the Ypres Salient.

George Hurdley was born in Preston, Lancashire, and was living in Ironbridge, Shropshire when he enlisted at Shrewsbury and then saw service as a Private (No.10036) with the 1st Battalion, King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. Present out on the Western Front from 20th September 1914, he was serving as a Lance Corporal and Acting Corporal when he was killed in action on 31st January 1915 during the fighting in the Ypres Salient. Having no known grave, he is commemorated by name on the Ploegsteert Memorial. He was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Hurdley of 3 Chapel Road, Ironbridge, and his brother, Arthur John Hurdley also lost his life during the war.
